Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has condemned an individual, believed to be Puteri UMNO vice-chief Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi, over some irresponsible statements related to a man shot dead by the police. The UMNO woman falsely claimed on Sept 25 that a man from Penang had run amok due to his colleagues’ remarks which allegedly insulting Islam.
On September 23, Sheikh Mohd Khairil, a 25-year-old factory worker in Penang, had attacked two of his colleagues. As a result of the attack, a 48-year-old female supervisor died due to fatal wounds to her head, neck and arms while a 53-year-old security manager was hacked on his arms. The attacker was gunned down when he attacked the police with two machetes (parang).
Police Chief Hamid Bador revealed that Sheikh Mohd Khairil had been influenced by terrorist video clips from the Middle East. According to the police, the suspect is believed to have suffered from depression for several months and had been absent from work for a week. In short, the attacker had become extremist and radical.
Mr. Bador advised the public, especially parents, to monitor the activities of their children as allowing them to watch too many violent videos on social media could radicalise them. The police chief has also warned that the authorities would not hesitate to act against those who spread fake news on the case as it could cause racial tension.
However, UMNO, as usual, saw the incident as a jolly good opportunity to stir up racial and religion sentiments among the Malays that the Muslims and Islam are under attack. After having ruled the country for 61 years before they unexpectedly lost power in the May 2018 general election, UMNO leaders like Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi still believed they were untouchables and above the law.
Twisting and spinning the fact, the despicable Nurul falsely and deliberately told a ceramah (campaign gathering) in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan on Wednesday night (Sept 25) that the man whom police shot dead had gone amok after two people allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad. Clearly the Puteri UMNO vice-chief was playing a dangerous racial and religion game.
Nurul reportedly told the audience – “Yesterday, a martyr was laid to rest. Sheikh Mohd Khairil was shot because he went amok in front of two “kafirs (infidels)” who insulted the Prophet Muhammad.” Not only UMNO intentionally ignored the police chief’s warning, they purposely incite the Malay Muslims against minorities Chinese and Hindus with fake news.
Heck, they even tried to put the Malays and the police at loggerheads. Understandable, the furious Hamid Bador said – “On the incident in Penang, there are still irresponsible people who are issuing their own statements, saying the person died a martyr. I view this matter seriously because if the man died a martyr, then how about my men who shot him? Are they kafir (infidels)?”
So far, the police have arrested three men on Sept 26 in connection to social media postings about the fake news. The first arrest was made in Butterworth, Penang where a 28-year old unemployed man was detained. The second arrest involving a 42-year old backhoe tractor driver occurred in Lunas, Kedah. A 28-year old subcontractor was the third suspect arrested in Kuala Muda, Kedah.
The three suspects are being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code – intent to incite any class or community of persons to commit any offence against any other class or community of persons, punishable with 2 years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both. Reports were made against Facebook users Zulkifli Abd Kadir and Mohd Hafizi for spreading the fake news.
They are also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network service – which carries the penalty of 1 year imprisonment, a RM50,000 fine, or both. However, for some weird and bizarre reason, Puteri UMNO vice-chief Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi was not arrested.
Yes, even though the police said they will investigate the UMNO woman politician, she appears to enjoy special privileges unlike the three ordinary men who were arrested for spreading fake news on social media. Perhaps the police should explain why there are two sets of rule – one for ordinary folk and one for a politician like Puteri UMNO vice-chief Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi.
In essence, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador should stop whining, moaning and bitching about the police being mocked and insulted for killing a radical and extremist – Sheikh Mohd Khairil – but treated like a martyr by UMNO politicians. Instead of pussyfooting, he should give orders to his boys to arrest troublemakers like the UMNO warlord Nurul Amal.
Amusingly, after she learned the police are investigating her, Nurul claims that she did not endorse violence acts in her speech about the death of Sheikh Mohd Khairil but was merely offering a prayer for the deceased’s soul. First, she praised the radicalised extremist as a Muslim hero who had died as a martyr. Now, the same dumb woman has changed her story after realising her screw up.
Make no mistake. Nurul Amal, the Puteri UMNO vice-chief, knew about the police warning against inciting racial and religious hatred. But she ignored – even challenged – the IGP Abdul Hamid Bador’s warning and falsely claimed that the Malay factory worker had run amok due to his colleagues insulting Islam. Nurul treated the police chief like a lame duck.
And the reason why even a junior UMNO leader like Nurul Amal treats police chief Bador like a lame duck was because she knew the police would think twice about taking action against UMNO, even though the corrupt and racist political party is no longer running the federal government. Like it or not, the police have no one to blame but themselves.
Whenever opposition UMNO Malay nationalist and the PAS Islamist party spew fake news related to 3R (religion, racial and royalty), the authorities would play dumb – see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil – largely because even Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Minister of Home Affairs Muhyiddin Yassin would bury their heads in the sand when such sensitive matters were politicised.
More importantly, to allow Nurul walks away scot-free after declaring a radicalised Muslim extremist as having died a martyr will encourage – even instigate – more Muslims to run amok and slaughter non-Muslims. Don’t be surprised to read people who criticise Indian Muslim preacher Zakir Naik would be butchered by some radical Muslims too.
