Fight at Sabah mall nothing to do with race, says police chief

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police chief Omar Mammah has warned the public against inciting public unrest by suggesting that a brawl between two groups at a mall here was racially charged.
A video of the brawl has gone viral over social media, accompanied by claims that the fight took place between two groups of different races.
Omar said there is no evidence to suggest the fight had anything to do with racial issues, adding that the police have identified several suspects involved in the brawl which took place at 6pm yesterday.
“My advice is those with information, please come forward to help in our investigation, but don’t sensationalise the incident with racial sentiments.
“One of the victims we spoke to said he didn’t even know why he was attacked,” he said.
Sabah police chief Omar Mammah shows a photo of ‘Derek’, who is wanted to assist in the police investigation.
Omar said the victim, aged 28, was having a drink with a friend at a restaurant at the mall when two men, one identified only as “Derek”, attacked them with an iron bar, a brass knuckle and chairs.
The victim suffered injuries to the head, face and body.
In the 38-second clip, two groups of men can be seen throwing chairs at each other. Some were holding what appeared to be steel rods.
At one point, a man can be seen running down a flight of stairs with several people chasing after him and hurling chairs.
Omar said the alleged victim’s friend had gone to his defence, sparking a clash between two groups.

He said police have also identifield “Derek”, in his 40s, and expect to make several arrests soon. - FMT
