For employees, it’s all about the money, study finds

PETALING JAYA: A recent study by a human resources solutions agency has found that Malaysian employees place the most value on attractive salaries and a healthy work-life balance when it comes to jobs.
The Employer Brand Research 2019 study, conducted by Randstad, found that 64% of respondents placed attractive salary and benefits as the most important factor in work, followed by healthy work-life balance at 49%.
Randstad Singapore and Malaysia managing director Jaya Dass said companies would be able to produce a loyal and productive workforce if they were able to provide employees with meaningful benefits, such as flexible work arrangements and adequate parental leave and childcare services.
“Most of us spend approximately one-third of our prime years working, and it has become an integral part of our lives.
“People want to work for companies that can support their professional growth and care for their overall well-being,” she said.
She said companies with a strong management team also appeal to employees, with 44% of respondents rating strong management in a company as an important factor.
“People want to work in an organisation led by a strong and capable management team, especially one that is able to drive the company forward in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, during a period of changing economic and political landscapes.
“When leaders are transparent about matters such as profitability and challenges, it gives workers and potential employees a sense of stability,” said Dass.
The study also found that many young workers are looking for jobs that can provide them with upskilling opportunities, based on the response of 42% of Gen Z and 34% of millennial respondents.
“Employers that want to stay competitive with a talented workforce will also need to invest in developing their own people,” Dass said.
“If workers are not equipped with the right skills for the job, employers will not be able to optimise workplace performance and productivity.”
Meanwhile, when seeking an ideal employee, 68% of Gen X respondents prioritised good salaries and benefits, 51% of millennials looked for a healthy work-life balance and 50% of baby boomers emphasised employers having strong financials.
The study, part of a global brand research surveying 200,000 people across 32 different markets, received the response of 2,504 people in Malaysia. - FMT
