More JPN officers to be held over fake ICs sold to Chinese nationals

Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.
GEORGE TOWN: Police expect to make another round of arrests of National Registration Department (JPN) officers in Penang as part of their swoop on a Malaysian citizenship racket run by officers who sold fake birth certificates and identity cards targeting China nationals.
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said police had completed their interrogation of some 20 officers picked up earlier.
“This will be our second phase of arrests. Those about to be arrested are involved in the same syndicate. More officers from JPN will be arrested,” he said.
Police had charged a Penang JPN assistant director and five other staff members for running a fake IC and birth certificate racket. These were later sold to China nationals.
The racket allegedly sought RM100,000 to RM600,000 for such citizenship documents.
Penang JPN assistant director Mohd Faizul Ariffin, 34, claimed trial last week to 11 charges, involving forgery, trafficking of migrants and violation of JPN regulations.
Faizul pleaded not guilty to five charges under Regulation 25(1) (i) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 for issuing ICs in the names of Tan Xiu Xiu, Lim Hock Eng, Ewe Chor Beng, Yang Xiaohong and Pheh Jin Leong.
He was alleged to have committed the offence at the Penang JPN headquarters at the Federal Building, Anson Road, here, between Sept 20, 2018 and May 3, 2019. - FMT
