No approval has been given for the construction of an oil refinery in Segari, Lumut, said Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
“There are companies that came up with proposals to set up the oil refinery but they have to carry out environmental assessments, that we have no objection.
“When the proposals come to us (the state government), we will look into them thoroughly and so far, no approval has been given for such a project,” he told reporters after opening the two-day 2019 Perak AgroFest at the Gopeng Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) today.
Ahmad Faizal was commenting on a Facebook posting by a non-governmental organisation and residents in Manjung calling on the state government to cancel the oil refinery project for fear that it would not only affect the environment and fishermen's income but also prevent turtles from landing in Segari.
The state government will not allow any project that can damage the environment, he said. - Bernama
