KUCHING: An opposition leader in Sarawak has spoken of a “wind of change” in the political arena there, claiming many Sarawakians are eager for a change in state government.
Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) Youth chief Johnical Rayong Ngipa said support for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is on the decline, even though it is a local coalition.
The Engkelili assemblyman said GPS leaders had been governing the state for “too long” and that they carried with them too much baggage.
“After 56 years, people are still asking about development, road infrastructure and basic utilities like clean water, electricity and roads,” he told FMT.
“There is also the rising cost of goods, not to mention the drop in commodity prices. The people can’t be waiting for another five, 10 or 15 years.”
Rayong said he was confident that PSB, as a local independent party, could fulfil public expectations if it were to gain control of the state.
He said there had been an increase in members from various backgrounds, including youths from rural areas and those who had left GPS and Pakatan Harapan.
“This shows that Sarawakians have accepted PSB and want a change in state government,” he said, adding that the party would go all out in the upcoming state elections.
He also welcomed the announcement by PSB president Wong Soon Koh that the party would be contesting the Mambong seat, won by Jerip Susil before his departure in July.
Susil resigned from PSB following a cut in funds for minor rural projects and the rural transformation programme for the party’s elected representatives.
“Even if Susil is contesting in Mambong, we will fight to get it back,” Rayong said.
He also challenged critics who said PSB has no direction, saying: “They’re probably the ones who don’t have any direction.”
“Our fight is for Sarawak,” he added. “This is our direction.” - FMT
