An Amanah leader claimed today that the strife within Perikatan Nasional has intensified, as PAS has yet to name a replacement candidate for Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as the coalition’s chairperson.
Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil mocked PAS’ stance, saying the party continues to keep everyone guessing over PN’s leadership, likening the situation to a reality TV programme where viewers wait week after week to find out who would be eliminated.
“This guessing game is like the reality TV show Akademi Fantasia, which audiences used to eagerly await each week to see who would be voted out.
“Whereas, under normal circumstances, it is the party president (Abdul Hadi Awang) who leads a coalition and is subsequently named as the prime minister (PM) candidate. This shows how weak PAS is,” Faiz claimed.
Yesterday, Hadi said PAS is ready to lead PN and will discuss several names, including his own, for consideration to replace Muhyiddin.
Last Dec 30, Muhyiddin announced his resignation as PN chairperson, amid escalating tensions between PAS and Bersatu sparked by an internal feud in Perlis that led to the replacement of a PAS menteri besar with a Bersatu leader.

Muhyiddin’s announcement also triggered a series of resignations by Bersatu state chairpersons, including party secretary-general Azmin Ali as PN Selangor chairperson, and Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu as PN Perak chairperson.
PAS appears strong
Commenting further, Faiz also questioned earlier claims that PAS had many candidates suitable to become prime minister, as the party has failed to put forward a clear figure to lead the coalition.
“Although it was previously claimed there were many candidates - enough to fill four lorries - the reality is that PAS is still groping in the dark.
“PAS appears strong only within its own party, but fails to lead a coalition, let alone be put forward as a prime ministerial candidate,” he claimed.
On the structure of national administration, Faiz said political stability requires the leader of the main party to head the coalition and the government.

He referred to the administration of former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, which he said was fragile because the Umno president at the time, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, was not part of the government - unlike the current unity government, which is seen as more stable with Zahid directly involved as deputy prime minister.
According to Faiz, PAS’ failure to name its president as PN chairperson risks creating instability within the coalition and sends a negative signal to voters ahead of the next general election.
At the same time, Faiz stressed his respect for Hadi and belief that there is no other figure within PAS comparable to him for the post.
“PAS claims that its struggle is based on Islam and that ulama leadership must continue. However, PAS does not have an ulama figure as formidable as Hadi.
“When PAS sidelines this ulama-level president, then the Islamic struggle that PAS proclaims has already lost its meaning,” said Faiz, who is the son of the deceased former PAS president Fadzil Noor. - Mkini
