Chegubard to make new exposés on graft involving public agency, zakat centre

Port Dickson Bersatu chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin intends to expose two more cases of alleged power abuse and corruption, supposedly involving a public service agency and a zakat centre.

Badrul, also known as Chegubard, yesterday said he will submit information on the two cases to MACC, with one of the issues involving the head of a public service agency’s property ownership, which allegedly raises serious questions on the source of such wealth.

Another case involves a state-level zakat centre alleged to be involved in misappropriation and abuse of position, including the use of zakat funds to purchase land that ostensibly benefited cronies and certain acquaintances.

“Zakat funds are supposed to be used to help “asnaf” (tithe recipients), but what is alleged to have happened is deeply disappointing,” Berita Harian quoted Badrul as saying.

He also stressed that his move to report the alleged misdeeds is aimed at “cleansing institutions of misconduct” and is not intended as an attack against Islamic institutions or any particular body.

“It’s the same as when certain quarters accuse us of attacking our armed forces, (but) in reality, we want to defend lower-ranking personnel,” he added.

In December last year, Badrul alleged that a forensic review of documents he received anonymously showed monthly transactions amounting to tens of thousands of ringgit credited into the accounts of a senior army officer and his family members.

His complaints led to then-army chief Hafizuddeain Jantan’s appointment as the next armed forces chief to be put on hold, despite the appointment having been decided at an armed forces council meeting and receiving royal assent.

On Jan 23 this year, Hafizuddeain claimed trial at the Shah Alam Sessions Court to two counts of receiving proceeds of unlawful activities amounting to RM145,000.

The day before, he also claimed trial at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to four charges of receiving more than RM2.12 million in proceeds from unlawful activities.

Former armed forces chief Nizam Jaffar was also charged with four counts of abusing his position and receiving RM752,481.90, as well as criminal breach of trust involving RM3 million.

Yesterday, Hafizuddeain lodged two police reports against Badrul over leaked banking documents and the dissemination of what he labelled as slanderous statements.

Hafizuddeain’s lawyer, Aizul Rohan Anuar, also said his client is mulling civil action against the banking institutions involved and Badrul for alleged defamation.

The Bukit Aman Classified Crimes Investigation Unit has since taken over the investigation into Hafizuddeain’s reports.

Probed under OSA, among others

Commenting on the investigations against him following Hafizuddeain’s reports, Badrul said he is being probed under the Official Secrets Act 1972 and the MCMC Act 1998.

The Bersatu leader also claimed that he is facing investigations under the Defamation Act 1957 and the Sedition Act 1948.

“On Monday, I was called to the Malacca Tengah district police headquarters to have my statement recorded. My mobile phone and gadgets also had to be surrendered.

“Many of my gadgets have been seized after the authorities obtained approval from MCMC,” Sinar Harian quoted him as saying.

Responding to allegations that he had leaked national secrets, Badrul emphasised that his disclosures had not involved any military operation or strategies.

The Bersatu leader also dismissed claims by certain quarters that his exposés had demotivated the armed forces.

“I can prove otherwise by showing thousands of messages I have received from lower-rank military personnel…who thanked me and regained their spirit (as) they know what is really happening,” he added. - Mkini
