Former Bersatu leader Wan Saiful Wan Jan has pushed back against relentless criticism by party information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz over an upcoming Perikatan Nasional supreme council meeting, which excludes Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
In a Facebook post today, the Tasek Gelugor MP questioned Tun Faisal’s motives for insisting that Muhyiddin remains the legitimate coalition leader despite his resignation on Dec 30 last year.
“If Muhyiddin is still PN chairperson, then why has he not immediately called for a PN supreme council meeting to discuss who should be his successor?
“Shouldn’t a responsible coalition leader attempt to solve such an important issue? Do not let anyone say that Muhyiddin and his ‘apple polishers’ have not found a way to make a U-turn, which is perhaps the reason why Muhyiddin has been afraid to call for a meeting,” Wan Saiful (above, right) said.
Yesterday, Tun Faisal also described PN deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan’s notice to call for a PN supreme council meeting on Jan 29 as contradictory to the coalition’s constitution.

He argued that Muhyiddin’s mandate as PN chairperson was still legitimate until his resignation was formally approved by the supreme council, and further criticised Takiyuddin for failing to invite Muhyiddin to the meeting.
‘No time for PN, but can meet party leaders?’
Wan Saiful also questioned if Muhyiddin and his supporters have been secretly lobbying for influence, noting the Bersatu president’s “lack of time” to meet with PN leaders as an unacceptable excuse.
“If you want to say Muhyiddin has no time, then many know he still has time to hold various other meetings. In fact, he is now suddenly diligent in calling to meet other Bersatu MPs and state assemblypersons.
“Someone also told me he is calling them for a meeting this February. Is he trying to lobby for influence?” he said.

He also described Muhyiddin as a “failed leader” who has shown no interest in carrying out his responsibilities.
“If you want to argue that Muhyiddin is still the PN chairperson, then tell him to do his job properly first.
“Because Muhyiddin has shown no interest in carrying out his responsibilities as coalition leader, presidents of other parties have since been forced to send out letters requesting that an extraordinary PN supreme council meeting be called.
“If you are no longer capable of doing the work, do not make it difficult for others who do want to work. Otherwise, that is what you call a ‘failed leader’,” he added.
Extraordinary meeting for new PN chair
On Friday, Takiyuddin issued a notice calling for an extraordinary PN supreme council meeting to appoint a new chairperson for the coalition.

At a press conference yesterday, Takiyuddin also refuted Tun Faisal’s claims that the meeting was “unconstitutional”, explaining that the convening of the coalition’s supreme council could still take place upon written requests from at least half of its component parties.
Takiyuddin also said the coalition’s constitution does not limit its top position to the presidents of component parties.
Instead, he said, the constitution stated that supreme council members would choose the PN chairperson, and he or she shall hold the position as long as the council desires. - Mkini
