Dr M stops by at café, first public appearance since Jan 6 fall

Dr Mahathir Mohamad, hospitalised after a fall on Jan 6, made his first public appearance today.

The 100-year-old former prime minister was seen in a wheelchair, wearing a short-sleeve shirt and kain pelikat, at a café in Pavilion Damansara.

His press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, described the outing as an important milestone in Mahathir’s recovery.

“Mahathir enjoyed a glass of iced chocolate for his first outing since being admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Jan 6 for treatment and recovery after suffering a fall at his residence at The Mines, which resulted in a fracture in his right hip,” he said.

However, Sufi confirmed that Mahathir has not yet been discharged from the hospital, and visits remain restricted to close family members.

The 40-minute visit was accompanied by his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Ali, IJN chief executive officer Dr Ezani Taib, and several medical officers from the hospital.

On Jan 10, it was reported that the former premier faced a lengthy recovery after sustaining a fracture on his right hip in the fall at his home. - Mkini
