PARLIAMENT | Newly elected Kinabatangan MP Kurniawan Naim Moktar was sworn in today as a member of the Dewan Rakyat.
He took his oath before Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul, witnessed by MPs from both sides of the aisle.
Later, Kurniawan stood up for the first time in the House to ask a supplementary question to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, during Minister’s Question Time this morning.
“I want to invite the new MP. Kinabatangan, take your time, take a breath, proceed with your question,” Johari said, prompting laughter from other MPs.
“My question to Tambun (Anwar)... From the announced investments, what is the percentage that will go to interior areas such as Kinabatangan and others?” said Kurniawan, who is also Kinabatangan Umno Youth chief.
In his response, Anwar, who congratulated Kurniawan for swiftly raising a question, said: “When investments come in, we can’t necessarily control (where it goes), except to determine the priority sectors.”
Kurniawan continued the legacy of his late father, Bung Moktar Radin, by retaining the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat in the by-election last Saturday.

He secured 19,852 votes, winning with a large majority of 14,214.
Kurniawan defeated his challenger, Saddi Abdul Rahman - a former Sukau assemblyperson - who garnered 5,638 votes, while independent candidate Goldam Hamid obtained 946 votes.
The by-election was held following the vacancy created by Bung’s death on Dec 5, less than a week after he won the Lamag seat in the Sabah state election on Nov 29, 2025. - Mkini
