Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Chan Foong Hin has assured adequate supply and no price hikes on pork for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations next month.
Speaking to reporters in Parliament, Chan said that Perak remains the largest domestic pork supplier for the peninsula market.
“For the upcoming Chinese New Year, we do not have any issue of insufficient supply. We always have sufficient supply.
“A total of 60 percent of the pork or live pigs supply in the peninsula is from Perak. So, Selangor does not produce much,” he said.
The Kota Kinabalu MP said this when asked about the impact of potentially reduced supplies from pig farms located in Tanjung Sepat, Selangor, initially marked to stop operations and shifted to Bukit Tagar - a plan which has since been scrapped.
Chan added that existing farms in Tanjung Sepat had, since last year, recorded a drop in production due to the African Swine Fever, and the reduced amount was supplemented with frozen imports from Perak pig farms or other states.
“Since Perak controls 60 percent of (pork) supply, last week I met with the major live pig farmers in the state and they all committed to no price hike for the Chinese New Year.
“So if there’s any price hike for pork, it’s not because of farmers but maybe other partners in the supply chain,” Chan added.
Earlier, Chan also launched two sets of local fruit boxes designed for sale as gifts for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.
As an alternative to Mandarin oranges, the box included locally grown fruits such as bananas and dragon fruits, supplied by local farmers. - Mkini
