JOHOR BARU: A man and his family are thanking their lucky stars that they decided to leave home a little earlier than planned yesterday to buy school supplies.
Not long after they left, a car rammed into their rented house, bringing down the awning and damaging two other vehicles belonging to their neighbours.
Mohamad Alif Najzmee Mohamed Ramdzan Shah, 25, said about 30 minutes after they left home, he received a call from a neighbour telling him about what happened.
He said the family had left the house in Jalan Permas 1, Taman Permas Jaya, about 3.30pm, with the crash happening about 4pm.
When they arrived home, he said, many people had gathered at the scene, adding that he "could not imagine what might have happened" if his family had been at home, as his children often play in the front area.
Although they are only tenants, he said the incident had left a deep impact on his family and neighbours, who fear a similar accident could happen again.
"The road in front of my house is quite busy because it's one of the main roads here. Security features should be enhanced here (so that something like this doesn't recur)," he said.
Johor Baru Selatan police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the crash occurred when an e-hailing driver lost control of his car after swerving to avoid a dog.
He said the 26-year-old driver was heading towards a residential area when the animal suddenly crossed the road.
The driver swerved into the opposite lane and struck a motorcycle, three parked cars, and a house, he said in a statement.
The driver escaped unhurt, but the motorcyclist sustained minor injuries and was taken to Sultan Ismail Hospital for treatment.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act for careless driving, which carries a penalty of up to a year in jail or a maximum RM10,000 fine. - NST
