Yeoh: Tents issue not anti-dakwah, don't smear new mayor

PARLIAMENT | Hannah Yeoh has reaffirmed Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) commitment to dakwah (proselytisation) activities, stressing, however, that such efforts must comply with the law.

The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) said the removal of Multiracial Reverted Muslims (MRM) tents in Bukit Bintang earlier this month should not be portrayed as an act against Islam, nor be used to spread slanderous accusations against Kuala Lumpur’s new mayor Fadlun Mak Ujud.

Speaking during Minister’s Question Time today, Yeoh said DBKL’s action was based solely on a complaint received by its enforcement officers regarding the placement of the tents.

“The allegation that (street dakwah) has been ongoing for 14 years and only became an issue after the new mayor took office is ‘fitnah’ (slander).

"This case was only about the issue with the tents, not with dakwah activities.

"DBKL only removed (MRM's) tents, chairs, and foldable tables that were at the location and left unattended at that time, after they received a complaint," she said in response to a supplementary question by Isam Isa (BN-Tampin).

According to Yeoh, DBKL enforcement officers were conducting a vandalism monitoring operation in the area when they received a complaint about tents placed at a junction in Bukit Bintang.

On Feb 18, DBKL officers took down the group’s tents for violating regulations prohibiting the obstruction of pedestrian walkways.

The council stressed that it has never barred public proselytisation, and that the enforcement action was aimed at ensuring the safe and orderly use of urban spaces.

DBKL has since returned the confiscated equipment to MRM following a meeting at its headquarters. - Mkini
