Honeymoon cystitis: The painful surprise every newlywed should avoid

WHEN COUPLES imagine their honeymoon, they usually picture sunsets, room service, beach walks and aggressively overpriced champagne.

What they probably do not picture is urgently Googling “why does it burn when I pee?” at 2am in a luxury hotel bathroom.

Yet that is exactly why a viral TikTok post has been making the rounds online, offering newlyweds a piece of advice rarely included in wedding speeches: please, for the love of your bladder, pee after sex.

The post put the spotlight on honeymoon cystitis, a term that sounds oddly romantic but is, in reality, about as glamorous as food poisoning on a cruise.

Honeymoon cystitis refers to a urinary tract infection (UTI) commonly triggered by sexual activity, particularly when intimacy levels suddenly go from “occasional” to “we paid for the honeymoon suite, so let’s maximise the package.”

Fortunately, prevention is far less complicated than wedding seating arrangements, as seen in the post which provided an easy, step-by-step guide.

Apparently, it is as simple as urinating after sex and cleaning one’s private parts after “doing” it.

Regardless, the viral post has since become an unlikely public service announcement, proving that while marriage comes with many lessons, some of the most important ones are decidedly less romantic.

Netizens were equally alarmed as seen in the comment section.

Then there was netizen Buttercup Mima stating that it is not the same with everyone as their antibodies are varied.

Another netizen used this as an excuse, pointing out that the guys need to give a higher dowry compared to RM20,000 since the ladies are the ones who usually suffered.

A lady further advised the bride to drink cranberry juice to prevent UTI. Even more frightening was netizen TIARA who shared that she got sick for a week.

For those who are unaware, UTI happens when bacteria find an all-access pass into the urinary tract, leading to symptoms including burning during urination, frequent bathroom trips, and pelvic discomfort.

As stated in the viral post, it doesn’t take much for a person to avoid all that discomfort.

A honeymoon is meant to create unforgettable memories, just ideally not the kind that requires antibiotics. So let’s be careful. — Focus Malaysia
