King tide floods Macallum flats, vehicles submerged

GEORGE TOWN: A high tide phenomenon reaching 2.9m triggered flash floods around the Pelangi Apartment area in Macallum here this afternoon, submerging several vehicles parked within the compound.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the incident, which occurred between 1pm and 3pm, saw seawater overflowing into the apartment's parking area and surrounding vicinity.

"However, no rainfall was recorded during the incident and no residents were affected or evacuated.

"The flooding was caused by seawater overflow during the high tide phenomenon, which reached 2.9 metres.

"The situation remained under control and did not require evacuation. Water levels in the affected area were estimated at between 0.1m and 0.3m," he said when contacted.

Zairil said the northeast district Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) had identified immediate measures, including maintenance works at the S16 outlet, to reduce the risk of recurrence.

He said the state government was also proposing long-term mitigation measures, including upgrading the S16 outlet structure, raising the level of the apartment parking area and improving the internal drainage system.

"Such measures are crucial to strengthen the resilience of coastal areas against king tide events, which are expected to become more frequent due to climate change and rising sea levels," he added.

Several photos of the incident have gone viral on social media, showing numerous vehicles partially submerged in the apartment parking area following the high tide phenomenon. - NST
