UPSKIRTING is a form of voyeurism where someone uses a camera or recording device to secretly take photos or videos underneath a person’s clothing without their consent.
It is generally done for sexual gratification, harassment or humiliation in public places like transit systems or festivals.
In Malaysia, there are those who believe that these victims were “asking” for it with their sexy attire or mini-skirts that allow such perverts to flex their photography skills.
But this assumption has been turned on its head with CCTV footage that captured one such pervert who was up to his twisted nonsense at an ATM machine in an unnamed location.
In the clip, the man can be seen crouching and secretly taking illicit photos of a lady standing in front of him in the queue. It mattered not that she was almost fully covered in a baju kurung as his fetish knew no bounds.
This obscene invasion of privacy was highlighted in a post on X by digital creator @kamaghul who observed that practically no woman is safe from such perverts.
Despite being conservatively dressed, it did not stop the photography enthusiast from displaying his camera skills.
Labelling the perpetrator “stupid”, there was also a picture that suggests that the pervert was caught and arrested though no further details were shared.
The post has generated 708.1K views at the time of writing with many commenters expressing disgust for the filthy-minded individual.
One observer underlined that attire isn’t the be all, end all in such cases. Despite being fully covered, it was no barrier to this pervert’s lustful desires. “What else can be done?” he asked.
This CCTV footage clearly shows that women who cover up their aurat (modesty) were not safe from prying eyes (or cameras). It is thus not fair to blame women who do NOT wear tudung or conservative attire for provoking the pervert’s lustful desires.
Another disgusted commenter noted that women clad in prayer garb in mosques also fall prey to such wayward individuals. She just could not understand what possessed these men to behave in such a manner.
Agreeing that clothing had little to do with this sort of behaviour, it was hoped that the authorities clamp down on such antics with stern penalties to deter other perverts.
It was also noted that looks can be deceiving. Behind shy, nerdy and introspective façade, there lay a very different kind of monster pointed out a few wary netizens. Caning of the pervert’s private parts was postulated as suitable punishment.
What were the root causes for such deviant behaviour? Some pointed to porn consumption while one interestingly lay the blame at anime (Japanese animation) fandom.
Others pointedly asked if the perpetrator had no sense of shame. The good name of the spouse, offspring and immediate family is inevitably tarnished by this amateur photographer’s penchant for illicit and illegal pictures.
“Do not let men feel superior by constantly laying the blame at women’s door.” A very obviously fed-up lady asked that society stop blaming women for such problems, focus instead on the men and their lustful behaviour.
The condemnation was swift and brutal for this “swine-like behaviour”.
