Premature to block Hamzah-linked party from PN, says Wan Fayhsal

The Machang MP says Hamzah Zainudin, with strong backing from elected representatives and grassroots, will bring added value to the coalition.

PETALING JAYA:
Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal believes it will be premature for Perikatan Nasional (PN) to shut the door on new parties for fear that one of them might be linked to Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin.

Wan Fayhsal said Hamzah continued to enjoy strong grassroots support among former Bersatu leaders and members.

“Who is Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin or Bersatu to block Hamzah’s group from joining?

“Hamzah is currently backed by 150 former Bersatu division chiefs, each with at least 100 members likely to follow them. That does not even include larger areas represented by MPs and state assemblymen.

“So in reality, Hamzah would bring added value to PN,” Wan Fayhsal told FMT.

Yesterday, Berita Harian reported that efforts by Hamzah’s group to join an existing political party seeking to become a PN member had hit a dead end after the coalition decided not to accept any new component party for the time being.

A source was quoted as saying that Bersatu leaders had voiced their objections on the matter during the PN Supreme Council meeting on Saturday, citing concerns that a new component member could become a “new home” for Hamzah and his camp, potentially destabilising PN.

However, PN deputy chairman Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man today said the coalition’s leadership had not held any official discussion regarding the entry of Hamzah’s supporters and followers. He also said the group had yet to submit any application for consideration.

Wan Fayhsal also said there was no need for anyone to panic over the possibility of Hamzah’s new party joining PN, as PAS needed an ally capable of playing a role similar to Umno’s in strengthening the coalition’s influence in marginal and fiercely contested seats.

He said this was important for breaking into the non-Malay voter segment, which still found it difficult to accept PAS, while at the same time consolidating Malay support.

“There is no need to panic. Wait and see,” he said. - FMT
