PETALING JAYA: Selangor Perikatan Nasional has called on Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki to issue an unconditional public apology to the Sultan of Selangor and the people of the state over statements and actions deemed to have caused public unease and unnecessary tension.

Selangor Perikatan chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (pic) said the coalition fully supported the decree issued by the Selangor Ruler, which stressed the importance of understanding and appreciating the principles of the Rukun Negara as well as respecting the Constitutional Monarchy institution as a pillar of stability for both the state and the federation.

“The decree by the Sultan of Selangor is not merely a general reminder, but a very serious reprimand against the arrogance and discourteous behaviour of certain political leaders who appear to have failed to understand the limits of decorum, politeness and respect towards the Malay Rulers institution in safeguarding harmony and the wellbeing of the people,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (May 19).

Azmin said the Sultan’s decree, which specifically referred to Wong and former Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu, both from DAP, showed that the matter had gone beyond ordinary political polemics and touched on fundamental principles of nationhood.

He also urged Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, in his capacity as leader of the state assembly, to take firm action against Wong, including referring the matter to the Selangor State Assembly Rights and Privileges Committee.

“This is important as the Sultan of Selangor is one of the pillars of the Selangor state assembly within the Constitutional Monarchy system.

“The Speaker must accept such a motion in order to defend the dignity, sanctity and honour of the Selangor state assembly,” he said.

Azmin warned that any failure by the Mentri Besar to act decisively would create the perception that the state assembly practised double standards in matters involving discipline, order and respect for the Constitutional Monarchy institution.

He stressed that the issue transcended political differences, saying all elected representatives must understand that freedom of speech comes with responsibility and should not be used to challenge decorum, morality and the principles of the Rukun Negara.

“We call on all parties to return to respecting the spirit of the Rukun Negara and to regard the decree of the Sultan of Selangor as guidance in preserving harmony, stability and unity in Selangor,” he added.  - Star
