Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar’s proclamation as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan has raised questions regarding the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, which was supposed to take effect today.
Tunku Nadzaruddin (above) was proclaimed as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar during a brief ceremony at a hotel in Alor Gajah, Malacca, after much commotion between police and Negeri Sembilan territorial chieftains (undang).
The ceremonial event, which is believed to have initially been scheduled to take place at the tunku besar Tampin’s office this morning, was held at a space in the hotel after police allegedly barred Tunku Nadzaruddin from leaving the premises.
Police are also said to have attempted to bring Tunku Nadzaruddin to Kuala Lumpur before his installation could take place.
During the ceremony, Jelebu Undang Maarof Mat Rashad, who represented the Undang Yang Empat, read out a script proclaiming Tunku Nadzaruddin as Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir’s replacement, effective immediately.

“In accordance with Article 11 of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution, we, the Undang Yang Empat, by virtue of the powers vested in us, hereby elect and proclaim the Tunku Panglima Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Nadzaruddin, as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
“This is in line with the proclamation by the Undang Yang Empat on April 19. Please be informed,” Maarof said, after which Tunku Nadzaruddin accepted the proclamation.
The ceremony was followed by the recitation of prayers and chants of “daulat tuanku” by the attendees.
‘A serious and big matter’
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Rais Yatim said a Zoom call was held during the event for the other undang, lawyers, and adat representatives.
Rais, who is also a scholar of adat perpatih - the Minangkabau customary law - stressed that based on the state constitution, the roles required for the installation had been sufficiently fulfilled.

However, he said that the more pressing matter at hand now is the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, which incumbent menteri besar Aminuddin Harun announced late last night.
Aminuddin said then that the dissolution, effective today, had Tuanku Muhriz’s consent, which raised concerns from Rais.
“The dissolution of the state assembly is subject to query, and possibly, it was not done according to law, (as) the Yang di-Pertuan at that moment was no longer the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
“(The state constitution stipulates that) the raja includes the Undang Yang Empat, but they were not consulted when the signing was done to dissolve the state assembly - this is a very serious and big matter,” Rais said.
Royal dispute
On April 19, the Undang Yang Empat issued two proclamations, one of which was their unanimous agreement to remove Tuanku Muhriz as Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
This is after they allegedly launched their own investigation into Tuanku Muhriz on March 5 for alleged transgressions in his royal duties.

They deemed the unspecified transgressions to have been committed deliberately, thus besmirching the royal institution.
The second proclamation is for Tunku Nadzaruddin to be installed as the next Yang di-Pertuan Besar with immediate effect.
Tunku Nadzaruddin’s late father, Tuanku Ja’afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman, was Tuanku Muhriz’s immediate predecessor.
However, Aminuddin had previously disputed Tuanku Muhriz’s sacking as one of the undangs who backed the proclamation, Mubarak Thahak of Sungai Ujong, had been removed from office.-Mkini
