Khairy eyed as N Sembilan 'poster candidate'; Orang Asli: Land is survival

Negeri Sembilan polls

  • Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin is reportedly being considered as a BN candidate for a state seat in the Rembau parliamentary constituency for the upcoming Negeri Sembilan election.

Berita Harian cited unnamed party leadership sources saying that the proposal followed Khairy’s strong showing in the recent Johor election campaign.

“Firstly, the incumbent has served (in Rembau) for three terms and is said to be prepared to make way for a new candidate.

“The second factor is that the party leadership views Khairy’s role in helping BN secure a landslide victory in the Johor election as highly effective, including in garnering support among young voters.

“There has also been a suggestion for Khairy to be positioned as a ‘poster boy’ and subsequently the menteri besar candidate if BN wins in this state election,” the source said.

Orang Asli rights

  • The Peninsular Malaysia Orang Asli Villages Network has criticised Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Nor for dismissing Orang Asli land issues as mere rhetoric.

Its chairperson, July Lanchong, described the remarks as irresponsible, saying land is a matter of survival for many Orang Asli, especially those without higher education.

She said their history, customs, beliefs, livelihoods, food sources, traditional medicine, and identity are inseparable from their ancestral lands, passed down through generations.

July added that many Orang Asli families still depend on income from their traditional land to support themselves and fund their children’s university education, rather than relying solely on scholarships or aid from the Orang Asli Development Department.

He was responding to Ramli’s remarks in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, where the deputy speaker and sole Orang Asli in the lower house stressed the importance of education for the community and said rhetoric over land issues would not advance the group. - Mkini
