Man dressed in fabulous kebaya triggers religious Malaysians and homophobes

MALAYSIA being a melting pot of culture and tradition amounts to many things. But among those many things, men wearing ladies clothing is not one of them.

This is understandable, since Malaysia is a Muslim country. However, one brave man decided to go against the norms by deciding to don a Baju Kebaya while shopping in a mall.

If he was trying to gain attention, he certainly got it. Never mind that nobody was arguing about inflation or potholes anymore.

The kebaya had entered the chat. Our religious netizens certainly didn’t disappoint, where many of them condemned the man and even threatened violence.

Netizen @Mia9860Amelia even asked the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) to hunt him down the same way they hunted Nur Sajat.

To re-cap, Nur Sajat is a Malaysian-born entrepreneur, social media personality and transgender woman who became one of the country’s most widely discussed public figures.

In 2021, Selangor religious authorities charged her under state Syariah law over allegations related to dressing in women’s attire during a 2018 religious event. She denied wrongdoing and later left Malaysia.

Hopefully the man in the red and gold Kebaya do not experience the same tragedy she had. Also, the comment section did not reveal much about the situation, such as his identity, or more importantly, his chosen pronoun.

But a sharp-eyed @apeinhd pointed out that this was in fact an old video, and it happened at Low Yat Plaza.

In there lies the weakness of the social media platform as a disseminator of  news News come and go quickly here on the cyberspace, but authenticity has never been at its lowest point.

Perhaps, away from the man who expressed himself openly without fear, we Malaysians should sit down and realise that there are bigger problems out there than a guy dressed in Kebaya.— Focus Malaysia
