Penang, Johor and Selangor account for 80% of Malaysia’s total trade in July

Penang, Johor and Selangor accounted for more than 80% of Malaysia’s total trade in July, the statistics department said.

It said Malaysia’s total trade in July amounted to a record monthly high of RM364.7 billion, with exports valued at RM193.6 billion and imports at RM171.1 billion, giving a trade surplus of RM22.46 billion.

“Penang remained the leading exporting state, accounting for 48.4% off Malaysia’s total exports, followed by Johor (19.1%), Selangor (14.7%), Sarawak (5.2%) and Kuala Lumpur (2.9%).

“Penang also recorded the largest share of Malaysia’s imports at 30%, followed by Selangor (23.4%), Johor (22.9%), Kuala Lumpur (9.6%) and Kedah (3.9%),” it said.

The department said Malaysia’s exports in July increased by RM53.5 billion, or 38.2%, compared to July last year, attributed to higher exports in Penang (+RM40.4 billion), Johor (+RM10.1 billion) and Selangor (+RM3.7 billion).

This was followed by Sarawak (+RM1.6 billion), Perak (+RM511.9 million), Kedah (+RM511 million), Kuala Lumpur (+RM507 million), Kelantan (+RM153.7 million) and Negeri Sembilan (+RM35 million), it said.

The states that recorded declines in exports were Perlis (-RM31.1 million), Melaka (-RM156.9 million), Terengganu (-RM208.8 million), Labuan (-RM405.1 million), Pahang (-RM1 billion) and Sabah (-RM1.9 billion).

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s imports in July increased by RM45.7 billion, or 36.4% compared to July 2025.

The increase was mainly attributed to higher imports in Penang (+RM21.8 billion), Selangor (+RM7.8 billion), Kuala Lumpur (+RM7.3 billion) and Johor (+RM7.3 billion).

This was followed by Kedah (+RM1.5 billion), Sarawak (+RM810.2 million), Pahang (+RM789.5 million), Negeri Sembilan (+RM594.3 million), Sabah (+RM268.5 million), Perak (+RM180.3 million) and Labuan (+RM145.6 million).

However, imports fell in Terengganu (-RM4 million), Kelantan (-RM24.7 million), Perlis (-RM43.9 million) and Melaka (-RM1.3 billion), the department said. - FMT
