PETALING JAYA: PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has been discharged from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) where he was treated at its coronary care unit (CCU) after reacting negatively to steroid treatment for his right shoulder.
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said the former deputy prime minister was now recuperating and had been brought back to the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital for monitoring and follow-up treatment.
“PKR is informed that Anwar is recovering. Doctors have also confirmed that he has been allowed to leave the HKL’s CCU,” he said in a statement.
He said Anwar would now undergo physiotherapy in Cheras to help restore his right shoulder’s condition.
The 70-year-old had been brought to the CCU this morning after his heart rate had lowered following a steroid injection that was administered on Saturday to treat prolonged pain on the shoulder.
Fahmi had described the heart rate as “worrying”.
Last November, Anwar underwent arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder for an injury originally sustained during an accident in 2014 in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur.
Although he underwent physiotherapy, the pain became worse over time.
His condition had deteriorated following an accident on Sept 22 last year when an escort vehicle rammed into the back of the prison transport ferrying him from HKL back to prison.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail sentence for sodomising his former aide.
According to a statement by the Prisons Department on Jan 7 this year, he could be released as early as June 10, after a one-third remittance of the five-year jail sentence imposed on him by the Federal Court on Feb 10, 2015. -FMT
