KUALA LUMPUR: The losses from the fire at the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) building in Petaling Jaya last month are estimated to total RM1.85 million.
Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Noh Omar said the fire was caused by a single-burner gas flame gun being used by workers undertaking maintenance.
They were using it to heat a granule bitumen membrane roll which was being used to make the building waterproof, he said.
He said the findings were from the Fire and Rescue Services Department.
“The maintenance work was being carried out on the first floor, on the external part of the building,” he said in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat.
He was replying to Hee Loy Sian (PKR-PJ Selatan) who had asked for the cause of the fire at the building on Jalan Gasing.
Noh said sparks had flown onto the cladding which then caught fire.
The landmark 58-year-old EPF building, overlooking the Federal Highway, caught fire on Feb 13, causing thick smoke to be visible from its upper floors.
Nobody suffered serious injuries. -FMT
