PUTRAJAYA – Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi gave yet another indication that the general election is near when he told Home Ministry staff at its monthly assembly that this may be his last such event with them.
The Deputy Prime Minister, who attended the Home Ministry’s assembly and excellent service awards ceremony, said he had enjoyed serving as their minister.
“This may be my last monthly assembly with the ministry. Some may not like me but I do like it here, and all of you as well.
“If I am given a choice, the ministry is always in my heart,” he said to applause from the crowd.
He was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in 2015.
Talk is rife that Parliament will be dissolved sometime between the end of March and early April. Its current five-year term ends on June 24.
Dr Ahmad Zahid also gave some “parting advice” to the officers serving the ministry and its 10 agencies.
“My advice to all of you is to continue to support and execute plans and policies that have been laid out because they are meant to benefit the rakyat,” he said.
“Which is why your service must be tip-top … be efficient, productive, honest and do not succumb to corruption and power abuse,” he said, adding that Malaysia’s civil service had improved tremendously and its successes were recognised internationally.
Advising his audience not to take naysayers to heart, Dr Ahmad Zahid said that while the Prime Minister continuously looks for new measures to improve government services, civil servants can be assured that their welfare would also be considered.
At a press conference later, when asked if this was truly his last monthly assembly with the ministry, he replied: “Perhaps. But maybe there will be another one held next month.
“We don’t know for sure but we have scheduled one just in case (the election is not called),” he said with a laugh.
