GE14 | Umno information chief Annuar Musa has accused Bersatu leaders of deliberately allowing their party to be de-registered by not complying with the Registrar of Societies' (ROS) request.
He said this was done in order to blame others for Bersatu's predicament.
According to him, this was part of “Mahathirism” because a similar incident happened in 1988 when Umno was declared illegal at the time Dr Mahathir Mohamad was president.
“Mahathir had allowed Umno to be dissolved in 1988 on purpose, as part of a trick and strategy to get rid of those he did not want (in the party).
“This time is no different,” Annuar told Malaysiakini.
The Umno supreme council member was commenting on Mahathir blaming Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for Bersatu being slapped with a provisional dissolution order under Section 14(5) of the Societies Act 1966 yesterday.
Bersatu has a 30-day window to file an appeal and adhere to the ROS' request, failing which the de-registration becomes permanent.
At a press conference this afternoon, Mahathir blamed Najib again, accusing the prime minister and the ROS of attempting to prevent Bersatu and him from contesting in the coming general election.
Meanwhile, Najib's aide Rizal Mansor said the prime minister had nothing to do with the ROS' decision.
“The ROS' decision was free and independent.
“Everyone knows that despite being given the opportunity to submit the relevant documents, (Bersatu leaders) did not do so,” Rizal added. - Mkini
