PETALING JAYA – Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad today expressed concern that the Election Commission (EC) might wait until the last minute to prohibit PPBM leaders from contesting under the PKR logo.
Citing the suspension of PPBM just before Parliament was dissolved, he said there was a possibility that PPBM candidates would be barred from contesting under the PKR logo minutes before nomination on April 28.
“This is the fear, so we tried to meet them but they declined to meet us. They gave us reasons why they couldn’t meet us, saying they were busy. There are various answers we need from them which are currently unclear. We need to meet them.
“Instead, EC officials say they do not have time to meet us. This is not the way of the government.
“The EC should play its role in having a peaceful election. We can’t even get explanations from them,” he said at a press conference at the PPBM headquarters here today.
Mahathir, however, maintained that PPBM leaders would contest under the PKR logo and that the EC did not have the right to stop them.
“We have said we will contest as independents under PKR and the EC has not said anything about our announcement.
“We have already made the decision and we are not breaking any law or regulations with this move. We have seen other parties using the PKR logo before and the EC has not stopped them.”
When asked on contingency plans if the EC bars PPBM leaders from contesting under the PKR logo, Mahathir said the opposition had some ideas but could not reveal it.
“It’s our secret weapon,” the former prime minister added.
