Pakatan Harapan prime minister candidate Dr Mahathir Mohamad has topped the list of most admired men in Malaysia in a 2018 online survey.
The survey, which was conducted by UK-based market research and data analytics firm YouGov, saw Mahathir garnering a 15 percent admiration score in Malaysia.
Second on the list was tech giant Bill Gates who trailed far behind with an 8.30 percent admiration score.
Meanwhile, caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak came in at 14th place, with a 2.50 percent admiration score.
On the list of most admired women in Malaysia, singer Siti Nurhaliza was first with a 14.10 percent admiration score while Mahathir’s wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, took the second spot with 10.10 percent.
Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, was 20th on the list of most admired women in Malaysia, tying with Indian actress Deepika Padukone at 1.00 percent.
The list, which is divided into men and women, is a mix of local and international personalities.
Some of the other names on the men’s list are actor Jackie Chan, AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes, former US president Barack Obama, Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and football players Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Lionel Messi.
The women’s list included names such as entrepreneurs Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor, Nur Fazura Sharifuddin, Vivy Yusof, TV personality Oprah Winfrey, actresses Michelle Yeoh, Angelina Jolie and Emma Watson and Queen Elizabeth II of Britain as well as Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.
YouGov said it gathered open-ended nominations from panellists across 35 countries, asking them to name which man or woman alive today they admired most.
The firm then compiled a list of the 20 men and 20 women who received the most nominations and were nominated in at least four countries, and added 10 popular local figures to the lists of individual countries.
Using the list, YouGov polled the individual countries with two questions.
The first question was “who do you truly admire?”, for which respondents could select more than one name.
The second question was “who do you most admire?”, where respondents could only pick one name.
The scores from these two questions were then combined into a percentage share of admiration.
YouGov said these two questions allowed it to understand both the global reach and the intensity of a person’s support.
