Campaign launched to support Harapan’s youth candidates

GE14 | A campaign in support of Pakatan Harapan’s youth candidates in the 14th general election has been launched, pledging machinery, digital and financial assistance.
Organised by the Malaysian Youth League today, the reason for the campaign is to ensure the voices of the youths are included in policy-making.
"The league welcomes the recent announcement of several youth candidates by Harapan. These youth candidates are important to ensure the voice of youth continue to be highlighted, heard and taken into consideration when drafting policies.
“The league hopes Harapan will be braver and put forth more youth candidates in the coming general election,” its president Adam Adli said at a press conference held at the Suaram office in Petaling Jaya.
The campaign plans to help promote candidates where they are contesting in a "Youth League Roadshow" that it will soon launch. It also pledged to offer each candidate two volunteers, a digital marketing campaign as well as funds collected from the public.
In its first phase, it hopes to collect RM40,000 to be distributed evenly among its four chosen candidates.
They are Bersatu candidate for Paya Besar Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir, DAP's Young Syefura Othman and Sheikh Omar Ali for Ketari and Paloh respectively, and Amanah's Hazmi Hassan for Panchor.
Adam (photo) stressed that the campaign was exclusively open to youth candidates from Harapan component parties as their goal was to topple the incumbent "regime".
“To realise our goal of forming a better government and of ending the rule of the regime we have today, the league views that the only solution is the formation of a strong political coalition that is able to be an alternative choice for the rakyat.
“Thus, the league is ready to pledge support to the only coalition that fulfils that condition - Pakatan Harapan. We hope that other opposition parties that share the same aspirations (as Harapan) will join this coalition,” Adam explained.
Those who wish to donate to the cause can do by wiring funds into Maybank account no: 512745506143, held by Lensa Training & Consultancy.
Will hold candidates accountable
The four candidates later signed the Malaysian Youth Declaration 2017, signifying their commitment to upholding its 13 demands.
Adam vowed that the league would hold these candidates accountable.
"If they win and don’t uphold these demands, we will urge them to and even hold (street) demonstrations if we have to.
“We will make our voices heard to ensure these demands are met,” he said.
Among the demands are to fight for free education for Malaysians irrespective of race, religion and background; to fight for tertiary institutions to be autonomous and free from political interference and control; to encourage young women to take part in leadership and policy creation.
It also requires that signatories reject racial politics and class-based oppression; recognise and uphold Orang Asal and Orang Asli rights; and fight corruption and nepotism while also supporting a culture of responsibility and transparency.
This declaration was a result of the Malaysian Youth Congress organised by the league last year. - Mkini
