The court has postponed delivering its decision on PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar’s suit against former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar and caretaker minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for linking her to the Lahad Datu incursion.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court postponed its decision today pending additional submissions from both parties on April 18.
“She (judicial commissioner Faizah Jamaludin) wants additional submissions on a number of issues. Because of that – although she said is almost ready to deliver her decision – she wanted to get the views of both sides on these points.
“Therefore, she has given us about a week to prepare and come back… to complete everything, and she will deliver her decision,” said Sivarasa Rasiah, counsel for Nurul Izzah.
He was speaking to reporters after meeting Faizah in chambers today, together with the respondents’ lawyers.
Izzah had filed her defamation suit against Khalid and Ismail Sabri in 2015 over statements that supposedly implied she was involved in the 2013 Sulu intrusion of Sabah.
The impugned statements pertain to photographs uploaded by self-styled Sulu princess Jacel Kiram on Nov 9, 2015, which showed a meeting between her and Nurul Izzah.
Jacel is the daughter of the late Jamalul Kiram III, the leader of the Sulu armed group behind the Lahad Datu incursion.
Khalid and Ismail Sabri had claimed that this meeting amounted to treason.
Nurul Izzah clarified that the photo was a close-up of a group photo at an event organised by the Philippine government, and that she was unaware of Jacel’s identity at the time.
Faizah was originally slated to deliver her decision today.
Asked what points had Faizah asked the parties to submit, Sivarasa said he is unable to disclose discussions that took place in chambers. - Mkini
