Kayveas: BN will lose if MIC fielded in Cameron Highlands

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — Tan Sri M. Kayveas insisted today that his party MyPPP can produce the most winnable candidate in the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat, compared to MIC that is also hoping to contest it for Barisan Nasional (BN).

It said the party has been doing groundwork there in the last four years, and BN will lose if it decides to put an MIC candidate there instead.

“We have conducted 640 programs, added 5,600 new voters, of which 2,700 are MyPPP members and other welfare-related programs in Cameron Highlands in the past four years. We even managed to sway some 2,000 DAP supporters to BN.

“MIC, however, has been missing from the ground and was left rudderless until only four months ago. In the last election they even lost by a margin of 462 votes. If they were to contest again they would surely lose,” Kayveas told Malay Mail over the phone.

Kayveas was asked to comment on MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, who had earlier told reporters not to take the former’s remark at face value.

Both MIC and MyPPP wish to contest the seat, which is currently held by former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel.

BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor had previously offered Segambut, a DAP stronghold, to Kayveas, who declined by saying his party has been working hard in Cameron Highlands.

MIC Youth Chief Sivaarraj Chandran is believed to be the party’s pick for the seat, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Kayveas also said today that despite its Supreme Council’s decision today to stay with BN, the party might review this alliance.

“They have promised us that we would get four senators in the last election but we only got one.

We can’t live on empty promises but at the same time we know that we can deliver a seat to BN,” he said.

Currently MyPPP Vice-President Datuk Loga Bala Mohan Jaganathan is a member of the senate.
