GE14 | A Penang Umno leader has denied the state is facing a leadership crisis, insisting they only want to put up “new faces” in the coming 14th general election.
This follows speculation surrounding Penang Umno chief Zainal Abidin Osman's decisionnot to contest.
“It is a huge mistake to think there is a crisis in Penang Umno. There is no crisis whatsoever,” said state deputy liaison chief Reezal Merican Naina Merican in a statement.
He explained it was Zainal's “magnamity” to allow new faces to contest in GE14, adding, “This is limited to Nibong Tebal.”
“I'd like to remind everyone, Zainal is still heading the Penang BN machinery in this election.”
Yesterday, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution questioned the timing of the former Nibong Tebal MP's announcement, which came in the wake of BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak's rare visit to Balik Pulau, Penang.
Hitting back at Saifuddin, Reezal said Zainal's move showed the “positive and fresh” culture within Umno, unlike PKR.
“Such culture is increasingly fading and shrivelling in PKR. Penang PKR is still linked to the same faces.
“They are still nostalgic about old and outdated leaders,” said Reezal.
Reezal, the incumbent Kepala Batas MP, is speculated to be among three possible candidates to replace Zainal as Penang Umno chief.
The others are Bagan Umno division chief and former state Umno Youth chief Shaik Hussein Mydin, and Pulau Betong assemblyperson Muhamad Farid Saad. - Mkini
