PAS or allies to field candidate in Langkawi to take on Umno, Dr M

GE14 | PAS or its allies in Gagasan Sejahtera will be fielding a candidate for the Langkawi parliament seat in the May 9 general election, said the Islamist party's president Abdul Hadi Awang.
“We have not announced yet but we will either send a candidate from PAS or Gagasan Sejahtera.. a candidate who can fight, Insya Allah,” he was quoted as saying by Harakah Online.
Gagasan Sejahtera, which PAS describes as the third force, comprises Ikatan, Berjasa and Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM).
Ikatan is led by former minister Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir whereas PCM's most prominent face, deputy Huan Cheng Guan is a former Gerakan vice-president.
Hadi stressed that PAS would not remain silent and allow Pakatan Harapan or BN to win in Langkawi, which has always been an Umno stronghold.
The island seat would be a focal point in the election following Harapan's announcementthat its chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad would contest there.
The current incumbent MP of Langkawi is Umno's Nawawi Ahmad.
In the 2013 general election, the engineer-turned-politician won the seat with an impressive 11,861 vote-majority against PKR candidate Ahmad Abdullah and an independent challenger.
Harapan is hoping that Mahathir would generate a Malay tsunami that would tilt the scales in its favour. However, there is concern that PAS would split the votes in three-cornered fights.
Meanwhile, Hadi said PAS had never neglected its responsibilities with regard to other races when it ruled Terengganu in 1999.
“We gave (land) titles (geran) to the Chinese... Indians, we gave estates,” added the former Terengganu menteri besar.
The PAS president said there were several Chinese villages with only temporary occupation licence (TOL) during the previous administration but the PAS government gave them titles.
“When we rule, all the people are our people. We don't play around with them when we rule,” he added.
Therefore, Hadi expressed hope that the people would place their faith in PAS and allow the party to rule. - Mkini
