PKR’s Xavier won’t be contesting Sungai Kandis seat

According to sources, the PKR vice-president will contest another state or parliament seat.
Xavier Jayakumar had won the Seri Andalas seat in the past two general elections. It has now been renamed Sungai Kandis.
PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Xavier Jayakumar will not be defending his Sungai Kandis seat in the coming general election (GE14), say sources.
Sungai Kandis is the new name for the Seri Andalas state seat, which Xavier first won in the 2008 general election and defended in GE13, obtaining a 15,000-vote majority.
Sources said PKR’s top leadership has yet to decide whether Xavier will be moved to another state seat or if he will be contesting a parliamentary seat.
“This time around, Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, the incumbent for Kota Kemuning (formerly known as Sri Muda), will contest Xavier’s seat.”
Earlier today, FMT reported that Selangor executive councillor V Ganabatirau from DAP will contest the Kota Kemuning seat.
Ganabatirau is the incumbent for Sentosa, formerly known as Kota Alam Shah.
It is likely that Shuhaimi will come up against an MIC and PAS candidate in Sungai Kandis, a mixed seat with an estimated 39% Malay voters, 24% Chinese, 35% Indians and 2% others.
As for Ganabatirau’s Sentosa seat, sources say that PKR has yet to finalise a candidate.
“What is confirmed is that it will be an Indian candidate. The party is looking at several names, including youth and women candidates.
“In Selangor, there are more than a sufficient number of Indian candidates from PKR, so a number of them are still in contention.”
The Chinese-majority Sentosa seat has been under DAP since 2008, when M Manoharan won the seat while being detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for his involvement in the 2007 Hindraf rally.
In 2013, Manoharan was dropped in favour of Ganabatirau, who retained the seat for DAP in a four-way contest against BN’s Maglin Dennis D’Cruz, and independent candidates Loo Hok Chai and L Pannerselvam. - FMT
