Report: MCA sees ray of hope after Umno man nabbed for drugs

GE14 | MCA sees its fortunes improving in Bandar Tun Razak after the local Umno leader, who had been lobbying to be a candidate, was arrested for allegedly testing positive for drugs.
Chinese daily China Press, quoting an MCA source, said the party now stood a better chance of keeping its traditional seat.
MCA had named its Bandar Tun Razak chief Chew Yin Keen as the candidate, despite a strong lobby by Umno grassroots to have the Malay-majority seat to given to the party.
Umno grassroots had backed the detained leader as their candidate of choice, but his arrest has now thrown this into limbo.
The report also quoted Chew as saying that there was no final word on which party would contest in Bandar Tun Razak, but he stressed that MCA should be allowed to keep the seat.
"We have yet to receive word from MCA (central leadership) on which party will contest in Bandar Tun Razak or whether there would be a seat swap," he said.
The report also quoted Chew as saying that he believed the drug case will not be a drag on BN in its bid to capture the parliamentary constituency.
Meanwhile, the Umno leader told Malaysiakini today that he was "okay" and will address the drug claim in a press conference tomorrow. -Mkini
