Azmin Ali has questioned the timing of Supermax Corporation Bhd managing director Stanley Thai's public apology to caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"Why only apologise now, why not last year? This is a very unfortunate political gimmick.
"If BN pressures and threatens even corporate figures, it is very unfortunate," the caretaker Selangor menteri nesar told reporters in Shah Alam today.
In a press statement on Saturday, Thai had apologised to Najib for supporting the opposition in the 2013 general election.
Following the results of GE13, the Employees Provident Fund sold off its shares in Supermax, with its share prices subsequently taking a hit.
Thai is also currently appealing a conviction for insider trading in 2014, for which he faces a possible five-year prison term.
This morning, former minister Rafidah Aziz told Malaysiakini that she has resigned as Supermax's chairperson.
Rafidah, who has been critical of the Najib administration, said she disagreed with Thai's decision to apologise.
During his press conference, Thai also criticised the caretaker Selangor government's handling of the state's water supply, saying it caused two of his company's projects to be delayed for up to three years.
Eight of Supermax’s 11 factories are located in Selangor.
Quizzed on this, Azmin also questioned the timing of the criticism.
"Why now? In the last general election, he supported (the opposition),” he asked.
In a 2013 interview with Bloomberg, Thai said he would lend his support to then-opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat “to protect the future of my children.” - Mkini
