PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today hinted at the possibility of BN’s dissolution in the future, and the formation of a new opposition bloc without the former ruling coalition.
Speaking to reporters in Kuala Terengganu this morning, he said, “If the Alliance had its lifespan, so does BN.”
He was answering a question about whether the opposition parties in Malaysia would form a formal coalition in the near future.
“This (formation of a new opposition coalition) would not be the first time. We must look at the early scenario since 1955. Umno also joined the Bandung Conference or Asian-African conference during (former PAS president) Dr Burhanuddin’s (Helmy) time.
“PAS was a part of the movement to secure the country’s independence in 1957, albeit we differed in deciding how independence should be fulfilled. When the country needed unity following the May 13 incident (in 1969), PAS also joined the coalition government.
“When the Alliance was disbanded…and BN was formed, PAS was involved. If the Alliance had its lifespan, so does BN,” he said.
Hadi added that PAS was always willing to cooperate with anyone when it comes to the benefit of the country and its people.
When asked if this possible formation of a new coalition would see the demise of BN, Hadi said all he could tell is there will be a change in the local political scene.
“I can’t say that it would be terkubur (buried).
“If the banned communist (Malaya Communist Party) is not terkubur, what more BN which is not banned.
“But I believe that there will be political changes, followed by changes in coalition of parties, either in the government or the opposition,” he said.
When asked for a timeline of a formal opposition coalition’s formation, Hadi said he did not want to presume.
“We will see when the time comes. I can’t answer with presumption.
“What we see today is that Pakatan Harapan is disunited. Even one party could not stay united.
“There will be a change, and it may not necessarily involve only opposition parties. Maybe there are parties in Sabah that would become opposition,” he said in jest, without elaborating.
