It was Kelantan Umno which was probed by the police in regards to receiving funds from 1MDB and not him personally, former minister Mustapa Mohamed (above) has clarified.
In a brief statement tonight, the Jeli MP said that he merely assisted the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) as the ex-state party liaison chief.
"I would like to clarify the claim by Annuar Musa that I and several other Kelantan Umno representatives had been called by the police pertaining to funds, allegedly from 1MDB, received by Kelantan Umno.
"I was present to assist the investigations in my capacity as the former Kelantan Umno liaison chairperson.
"PDRM conducted their duty professionally and in an orderly manner. I respect the rule of law. Although I'm no longer with Umno, I will continue to provide my utmost cooperation in the matter if need be," he said.
This was in reply to Annuar, who had at a press conference earlier today, claimed that Mustapa and two other Kelantan Umno members had been questioned by the police, this about 10 days before he quit Umno last Tuesday.
Annuar also claimed that Mustapa had received a "substantial amount and this was what had become the subject of the police investigation. He did not elaborate on the source nor the amount of funds in question.
Mustapa announced on Tuesday that he was quitting Umno after 40 years with the party.
Less than 24 hours after his resignation, Kimanis MP and former foreign minister, Anifah Aman, followed suit. -Mkini
