PETALING JAYA: Lim Kit Siang has criticised Mah Siew Keong over his reason for stepping down as Gerakan president and said the latter should have quit over the 1MDB scandal instead of citing his party’s poor performance in the May 9 polls.
If the former Teluk Intan MP had quit over the 1MDB, he would have gained the “sympathy, support and solidarity of all Malaysians”, Lim said hours after the former minister announced his resignation.
“Mah’s resignation, without lodging a single protest at the 1MDB scandal is a great disservice to Gerakan and himself,” the DAP supremo said in a statement.
Mah announced his resignation as party president earlier today after Gerakan, which has since left the Barisan Nasional, failed to win any seat compared to the one parliamentary seat it won in the 13th general election.
“Many party members want me to remain as president. But as a captain, I made a promise to resign if the party performed badly,” he said after opening the Negeri Sembilan Gerakan 43rd delegates conference at Wisma Gerakan here.
But Lim was seemingly unimpressed.
“This is the fundamental problem with Gerakan and Barisan Nasional leaders – they cannot see the wood for the trees.” -FMT
