KUALA LUMPUR: Incoming PKR president Anwar Ibrahim will not win the Port Dickson (PD) parliamentary seat uncontested, Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa said today.
Annuar said the PD by-election was special as Anwar would be contesting.
“On our side, we do not feel any pressure. We can choose to contest. We can choose not to contest. Either way we are okay.
“We can contest if we want to. I hear that PAS wants to contest, and there is also talk of independents contesting.
“One thing is for sure. Anwar will not win the seat uncontested,” he told reporters at a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here.
Annuar said a decision on whether Umno would contest the seat would be made during the party’s political bureau meeting on Monday (Sept 24).
The Ketereh MP also said Umno had yet to hold discussions with PAS on the by-election, adding that discussions within the party must be held first.
Port Dickson MP Danyal Balagopal Abdullah vacated the seat to pave the way for Anwar to contest in an attempt to return to Parliament and to later become the nation’s eighth prime minister.
The Election Commission today fixed Sept 29 as the nomination day for the PD by-election. Early voting will take place on Oct 9 and polling on Oct 13.
It will be the first time that Anwar stands in a seat outside his hometown of Penang, where he represented Permatang Pauh twice, including for 16 years before his dramatic sacking as deputy prime minister in 1998.
The Port Dickson seat was won by Danyal, who got 36,225 votes, defeating BN’s VS Mogan (18,515 votes) and PAS’ Mahfuz Roslan (6,594 votes). - FMT
