Public caning brings positive impact, says PAS' non-Muslim supporters

The non-Muslim wing of PAS today said its members support the public caning of two lesbians in Terengganu, saying that it has brought positive social impact to the state.
The PAS Supporters Wing (Dewan Himpunan Penyokong PAS, DHPP), also holds the view that the non-Muslim community should not worry about the implementation of Islamic law in the country.
Its chief S. Balasubramaniam told Malaysiakini that they learned that the social situation in Terengganu had improved after the public caning was conducted earlier this month.
"This (Islamic law) is what is stated in the Quran, and it was implemented by the syariah court. We hope that this punishment makes people aware and in the future, they will not engage in such a behaviour.
"I also just came to know that in Terengganu, teenage boys and girls have started to behave.
"This (implementation of Islamic law) has helped to improve the youngsters’ behaviour, (to the extent) that they are scared to engage in immoral activities," he said today.
Balasubramaniam spoke to Malaysiakini after the launching of the DHPP national convention held at the Terengganu Sports Complex in Gong Badak.
He said the non-Muslims do not have to be scared of the implementation of Islamic laws as it will not affect them.
On the wing's role in PAS, Balasubramaniam said it aims to increase the support of non-Muslim voters to help the Islamist party win the 15th general election.
He said DHPP would be going all out to actively engage the non-Muslim community to explain about PAS struggle, in the hopes of garnering their support.
"We hope to increase the number of non-Muslim PAS supporters to exceed those of Pakatan Harapan’s.
"Actually, Harapan was able to form the government (in May) because the public wanted to change the government, not because Harapan can benefit the community." - Mkini
