Dr Chua Soi Lek has decided not to contest for the MCA presidency in the upcoming party elections, according to a source close to him.
For months, speculation had been rife that the former president would make a political comeback following his retirement in 2013.
The source said Chua would announce his decision at a press conference in Petaling Jaya tomorrow morning.
“He will explain the reasons behind his decision as well as his view of MCA at present (post the 14th general election) at the press conference,” the source told Malaysiakini.
MCA's incumbent president Liow Tiong Lai previously announced that he would not defend his position.
So far, only deputy president Wee Ka Siong has confirmed that he would vie for the top post, while speculation is rife that former vice-president Gan Peng Sieu would also enter the race for number one.
Gan is expected to team up with Johor MCA deputy chief Tee Siew Kiong, who was Chua's former political secretary when he was health minister.
Meanwhile, Perak MCA chief Mah Hang Soon is widely speculated to team up with Wee as his running mate.
A total of 35,000 MCA delegates will cast their ballots on Nov 4 to choose the party's new leadership.
Unlike its previous elections, this will be the first which will see MCA as an opposition party in its almost seven-decade history. - Mkini
