Why close illegal tahfiz schools but not vice dens, asks PAS

Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (left) and Khalid Samad.
PETALING JAYA: PAS has criticised its former leader Khalid Samad, now the federal territories minister, over his threat to shut down all illegal tahfiz schools, saying there was no similar action against liquor stores over the death of more than 30 people due to alcohol poisoning.
“As a Muslim leader, the idea of closing down unregistered tahfiz schools should not cross his mind,” said PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, a day after Khalid ordered Kuala Lumpur City Hall to take action against unregistered tahfiz schools.
The crackdown on illegal tahfiz schools comes in the wake of the arrest of the principal of a centre in Kepong, following allegations of sex abuse involving nine victims aged between 11 and 16. The school was later found to be operating without a licence.
Tuan Ibrahim said the case should be treated like any other crime.

“If someone committed a crime, arrest him, take action. No one would defend such actions. Punish him to the full extent of the law,” he said.
He urged Khalid to focus on vice dens including “the hundreds of illegal massage parlours and illegal entertainment joints”, as well as illegal factories which were violating environmental laws.
Tuan Ibrahim said Khalid should find ways to help unregistered tahfiz schools instead of shutting them down. - FMT
