Govt to acquire Highland Towers land for park, bungalow project

The Highland Towers block has been left abandoned since it collapsed in December 1993, killing 48 people.
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is to acquire the land occupied by the long-abandoned Highland Towers here to build a park and bungalows, Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said.
Zuraida, who had said in March that the building will be demolished by June, said there has been a delay in acquiring feedback from all the house owners as some of them are overseas.
She said the land acquisition will be carried out through the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council according to the Land Acquisition Act.
“We have asked the Selangor MB (Amirudin Shari) to speed it up,” she said after visiting Salak South New Village here today.
Zuraida said her ministry’s plan was to obtain feedback from the last 29 house owners, 14 of whom had agreed for the high rise condominium block to be demolished for redevelopment.
However, the other 15 were out of the country and their lawyers were unable to get back to her ministry, she said.
The site of the Highland Towers – which collapsed following a landslide on Dec 11, 1993, killing 48 people – and the adjoining two blocks will be redeveloped into a recreational park with 50 bungalows.
Demolition works had to be postponed to allow the Highland Towers Re-Development Committee, chaired by the ministry’s secretary-general, Mohammad Mantek, to work with the Public Works Department on a study on the soil’s structure.
Chinese new villages to undergo transformation

Zuraida also announced that her ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall will draw up plans to rejuvenate and beautify new villages. They will be assisted by three Malaysian, Taiwanese and Japanese universities.
She said Kampung Baru Salak South will be the pilot project. where proper planning for garbage disposal, public spaces and other amenities will be be drawn up.
The cost will be shared between the ministry, DBKL and the universities, she said. - FMT
