KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia could face far-reaching economic and security consequences if the conflict between the United States and Iran escalates, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan told the Dewan Rakyat today.
He said any outbreak of war in West Asia could disrupt global energy supplies, unsettle international trade and trigger price shocks that would inevitably affect Malaysia.
"A war involving Iran and the United States would have a very large impact not only on Iran and the West Asian region, but also on the world and Malaysia," he said during the Minister's Question Time.
Mohamad said tensions have intensified amid the US's hardened stance on Tehran's nuclear ambitions, coupled with reports of increased US military deployments in the Persian Gulf, including the redeployment of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford from the Mediterranean. - NST
