THE 16th General Election (GE16), officially due in February 2028, could be called much earlier, with sources telling Channel News Asia (CNA) on separate occasions this month that groundwork is being laid for a possible election in the second half of 2026.
Political insiders revealed that grassroots members of the unity government in Johor have been informally instructed to begin preparations after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, anticipating that national polls may be held concurrently with state elections.
Melaka’s state assembly term ends in December 2026, while Johor’s term concludes in April 2027, meaning their elections are due by February and June 2027 respectively.
However, both states could go to the polls earlier, potentially around June or July 2026, alongside GE16.
Separately, a senior civil servant told CNA that administrative officers have been placed on alert, with government resources on standby from June 2026 in anticipation of a possible election.
The prospect of an early general election reflects shifting political currents and the possibility of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim seeking a renewed mandate ahead of schedule.
If confirmed, Malaysia could see national and state polls held simultaneously, reshaping the political calendar. — Focus Malaysia
