One of the two lawyers named in a police report, which led to an investigation into an alleged attempt to topple the government, has rubbished the claims, describing them as the “mother of all lies”.
Lawyer Nizamuddin Hamid said his client, Na’imah Abdul Khalid, had never given her legal team such instructions.
“I confirm that I am one of the lawyers named in the report. The other (lawyer) named was Amir Zharif Abdullah.
“Throughout our duties as lawyers for Na’imah, there was absolutely no discussion or instructions given to us to overthrow the government or undermine parliamentary democracy.
“There was none and that (claim) is the mother of all lies,” Nizamuddin (above) told reporters when met at the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning.
Last Friday, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said that police were investigating a plot involving an “influential individual" and an international media agency.

The probe, he added, is being carried out under Section 124B of the Penal Code for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
The police report alleged that the individual - identified as Na’imah - had allegedly held an online meeting sometime in July last year, where she discussed a purported plan to use international media outlets to mount pressure on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki.
Na’imah’s two children, two lawyers, and several representatives of an international strategic communications firm purportedly attended the meeting.
Since then, a “communications plan” has leaked, detailing efforts to preserve the reputation of Na’imah’s late husband, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin.

This was amid an ongoing MACC investigation against Daim and his family over their wealth.
Right to defend family reputation
Commenting on this, Nizamuddin said that Daim’s family has the right to defend themselves from any allegations levelled against them by the government, MACC, and the media.
“The legacy, their name should be defended accordingly. That’s it.
“It is outrageous. (The claims are) the mother of all lies; the police report and the narrative that is being sold to all of you.
“So for now, let’s pray for the best,” he said.
Yesterday, Na’imah’s other lawyers, Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh, also denied Anwar’s assertions in Parliament that Daim’s family’s public relations plan involved “bankers” and “Zionists” in a purported attempt to sabotage the country.

The duo described the prime minister’s remarks as “false, preposterous, (and) outrageous”, further accusing the premier of deliberately misleading the Dewan Rakyat and the public.
Later, Anwar and his party, PKR, were questioned about double standards on engaging international public relations firms after it was revealed that PKR had engaged a US firm in 2016 to put pressure on then-premier Najib Abdul Razak to release Anwar from prison. - Mkini
