PETALING JAYA:
Higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir has urged Universiti Malaya (UM) and Liga Mahasiswa Universiti Malaya (LMUM) to resolve their dispute amicably, without resorting to legal action, over the student group’s use of the university’s name and logo.

Zambry said he had sought an explanation from UM’s management over the issue and stressed that such matters should first be addressed through discussions and consultations between the university and students.

“A dialogue and consultative approach is more in line with the spirit of the university ecosystem, which is based on openness, education, and the development of student leadership.

“I also believe that such matters should not be prolonged to the point of legal action if there is still room for an amicable settlement between both parties,” he said in a statement.

Zambry said student associations, whether formally registered with the university or otherwise, must respect university rules regarding the use of institutional names, logos, and identity.

At the same time, the minister said, universities could provide guidance to unregistered groups.

“I hope UM will take a more proactive and consultative approach in addressing this issue, while students are expected to approach it with an open mind and the spirit of seeking the best possible solution for the common good.

“The higher education ministry always encourages a culture of dialogue, understanding and mutual respect within the national higher education ecosystem,” Zambry added.

Earlier this week, LMUM said it had received a cease-and-desist letter from UM, demanding that it stop using the university’s name and logo.

LMUM president Ammar Daniel Noor Irwan said the March 6 letter, issued via legal firm Azmi & Associates, gave the group seven days to sign a letter of undertaking acknowledging UM’s trademark rights, failing which the university reserved the right to sue.

UM defended its decision, saying the letter was meant to protect its image and reputation following complaints from students and the public. - FMT
