The government is moving to regulate online shopping platforms, following complaints received by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim from the public and businesses.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said complaints included faulty electronics and the halal status of products.
"Based on the series of complaints (received) and instructions from the cabinet, the government - particularly the Communications Ministry and Finance Ministry - will begin taking action starting today," Fahmi (above) told a press conference at his ministry this afternoon.
This includes getting those platforms registered in Malaysia, with Fahmi noting that several platforms already have a registered company in the country.
It appears similar to the steps the government has taken to regulate social media platforms, which included compelling them to register a local company.
Nearly 2,000 complaints
Fahmi said MCMC has received a total of 1,964 complaints about the matter from Jan 1, 2025 until yesterday.
Of this number, 817 complaints were received from this year alone, he said.
"A total of 161 complaints were received regarding electrical or electronic products and four complaints were received regarding the authenticity of the halal status of the products sold," he added.
On Aug 20, Bernama reported Anwar as saying that the government will expedite the drafting of an e-commerce bill to strengthen regulation and protect stakeholders.
In June, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Armizan Ali said the government is looking into a new law to regulate foreign e-commerce sites to tackle counterfeit goods being sold online and better protect local small enterprises.
The law also aims to foster accountability among foreign e-commerce platforms, as they currently are not required to have a Malaysian representative, he was quoted as saying by Malay Mail. - Mkini
